Popularly regarded as a shallow expression of online narcissism, the selfie is both adored and reviled; yet it flourishes as one of the most effective outlets for self-definition.<\/span><\/p>\n

Journalistic responses have been derisive, but little attention has been given to the visual culture accompanying popular writing on the subject. The visual dimension of the selfie debate has produced an ideologically skewed and largely pejorative representational schema with troublingly gendered connotations. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u65b0\u95fb\u62a5\u9053\u5f88\u5c11\u5173\u6ce8\u4e0e\u81ea\u62cd\u76f8\u968f\u7684\u89c6\u89c9\u6587\u5316\uff0c\u76f8\u53cd\uff0c\u65b0\u95fb\u754c\u666e\u904d\u5bf9\u6b64\u6301\u5632\u7b11\u7684\u6001\u5ea6\u3002\u4eba\u4eec\u5728\u81ea\u62cd\u89c6\u89c9\u7ef4\u5ea6\u95ee\u9898\u4e0a\u7684\u8fa9\u8bba\uff0c\u4ea7\u751f\u4e86\u4e00\u79cd\u610f\u8bc6\u5f62\u6001\u4e0a\u7684\u626d\u66f2\u548c\u5e26\u6709\u8d2c\u635f\u610f\u5473\u7684\u8868\u5f81\u6a21\u5f0f\uff0c\u5176\u4e2d\u5e26\u6709\u4ee4\u4eba\u4e0d\u5b89\u7684\u6027\u522b\u5185\u6db5\u3002<\/span><\/p>\n

In an 22 August 2014 article in Forbes Magazine entitled \u201cCONTAGION \u2013 How the \u2018Selfie\u2019 Became a Social Epidemic,\u201d journalist Jesi Hempel characterized the selfie \u2013 popularly understood as spontaneous self-portraits taken with smartphones and other consumer-based devices \u2013 as a type of social scourge that has spread problematically through Western culture\uff08Hempel, 2014\uff09.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u57282014\u5e748\u670822\u65e5\u7684\u798f\u5e03\u65af\u6742\u5fd7\u4e0a\u7684\u4e00\u7bc7\u9898\u4e3a\u201c\u5371\u673a\u8513\u5ef6\u2014\u2014\u2018\u81ea\u62cd\u2019\u5982\u4f55\u6210\u4e3a\u793e\u4f1a\u6d41\u884c\u75c5\u201d\u7684\u6587\u7ae0\u4e2d\uff0c\u8bb0\u8005Jesi Hempel\u8868\u793a\uff0c\u81ea\u62cd\u901a\u5e38\u88ab\u7406\u89e3\u4e3a\u901a\u8fc7\u667a\u80fd\u624b\u673a\u548c\u5176\u4ed6\u57fa\u4e8e\u6d88\u8d39\u8005\u7684\u8bbe\u5907\u5236\u4f5c\u7684\u968f\u673a\u81ea\u6211\u8096\u50cf\uff0c\u662f\u4e00\u79cd\u7531\u897f\u65b9\u6587\u5316\u8513\u5ef6\u5f00\u6765\u7684\u793e\u4f1a\u7978\u5bb3\uff08Hempel\uff0c2014\uff09\u3002<\/span><\/p>\n

Needless to say, the group most readily associated with this cultural fixation is young women: particularly those in their teens to early thirties. Even the images that accompany these articles have produced a powerful visual culture that focuses almost entirely on women in the act of a type of petulant vanity. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u6bcb\u5eb8\u7f6e\u7591\u7684\u662f\uff0c\u6700\u5bb9\u6613\u4e0e\u8fd9\u79cd\u6587\u5316\u53d1\u751f\u8054\u7cfb\u7684\u7fa4\u4f53\u662f\u5e74\u8f7b\u5973\u6027\uff0c\u5c24\u5176\u662f\u5341\u51e0\u5c81\u5230\u4e09\u5341\u51fa\u5934\u7684\u5973\u6027\u3002\u8fd9\u4e9b\u6587\u7ae0\u4e2d\u7684\u81ea\u62cd\u751a\u81f3\u4ea7\u751f\u4e86\u5f3a\u5927\u7684\u865a\u62df\u6587\u5316\uff0c\uff08\u8fd9\u4e9b\u6587\u5316\uff09\u51e0\u4e4e\u5b8c\u5168\u96c6\u4e2d\u5728\u4efb\u6027\u4e14\u6709\u865a\u8363\u5fc3\u7684\u5973\u6027\u8eab\u4e0a\u3002<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the contradictions in popular discussions of the selfie resides in a distinction between low self-esteem, which is most associated with a tendency toward self-objectification, and high self-esteem, which is often connected to narcissism. The self-esteem of women is very prevalent in the selfie debate.<\/span><\/p>\n

Harry Wallop, a famous writer in America, has one central point on selfies: that this form of expression is the result of a culture that places a heavy premium on female beauty. In his assessment, girls are particularly vulnerable to a short of confidence, especially girls with high self-esteem, leading them to a conflicted relationship with their own identities and bodies.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is conveyed in the picture below is an insecure young woman of color\u2019s desperate attempt to create an image of physical attractiveness \u2013 but more importantly, a vision of normativity and happiness. But we still have to realize that selfies aren\u2019t empowering while they\u2019re a cry for help in essence.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u4e0b\u56fe\u6240\u4f20\u8fbe\u7684\u662f\uff0c\u4e00\u4e2a\u7f3a\u4e4f\u5b89\u5168\u611f\u7684\u201c\u6709\u8272\u201d\u5973\u6027\u7edd\u671b\u5730\u8bd5\u56fe\u62cd\u6444\u51fa\u4e00\u5f20\u6709\u5438\u5f15\u529b\u7684\u5916\u8868\u7684\u7167\u7247\u2014\u2014\u4f46\u66f4\u91cd\u8981\u7684\u662f\uff0c\u5b83\u4f20\u8fbe\u4e86\u4e00\u79cd\u6b63\u5e38\u5316\u548c\u5e78\u798f\u7684\u613f\u666f\u3002\u4f46\u662f\u6211\u4eec\u4ecd\u7136\u8981\u8ba4\u8bc6\u5230\uff0c\u81ea\u62cd\u4e0d\u662f\u8d4b\u6743\u884c\u4e3a\uff0c\u5728\u5b9e\u8d28\u4e0a\u662f\u5973\u6027\u81ea\u62cd\u8005\u7684\u547c\u6551\u3002<\/span><\/p>\n

The gendered dimension of selfie culture is certainly troubling, particularly the demeaning and ridiculing tone that punctuates most articles on the topic. But what is most disturbing is the recent pathologizing of the selfie phenomenon, linking it to Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) and even psychopathy. In the picture below, dozens of girls took selfies at a baseball game and grown men mocked them for it. \u201cDo you have to make faces when you take selfies?\u201dOne of the announcers said, \u201cEvery girl in the picture is locked into her own phone\u2026They\u2019re all just completely transfixed by the technology. You know the beauty of baseball is you can sit next to your neighbor and have a conversation. Or you had been here for nothing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In short, as the main group associated with selfies, young women who, through their efforts at self-expression, attempt to locate a sense of value and dignity in an increasingly contentious political, economic, cultural and technological landscape. The intentionality of women\u2019s wielding of technology is far more thoughtful and premeditated than we initially understood. Therefore, the tendency to mischaracterize women\u2019s selfie behaviors as entirely rooted in the reactionary emotionality and narcissistic personality disorder, ignores their highly tech-based self-representational strategies.<\/span><\/p>\n
